MECSAT is an interdisciplinary program and involves undergraduate students in Computer Science, Environmental Science, Physics, Math and more recently Biology in addition to the high school student projects described in the Education section. MECSAT has also involved students from St. Francis College in Brooklyn and the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC).
Undergraduate students participate in the MECSAT Program in several ways:
-Curriculum Integration Data and/or electronic projects are integrated in existing curriculum including Scientific Programming, Digital Systems, Remote Sensing, Air and Water Pollution, etc. At this level, we are able to engage more students in the investigations and capture motivation because the project is based at MEC.
-Independent Studies For capstone projects and independent studies, students are able to devote more time for investigations during the academic year. They are mentored by MEC faculty.
-Summer Internships NASA programs including the New York State Space Grant and the New York Research provide support for student stipends, launch travel and housing. The Vermont State Space Grant also provides housing for MEC students. Students are engaged in an 8-week summer program, develop modules or prepare ozonesondes for flight and also handle communications and data monitoring. |
