Ozone Profiles

The MECSAT project received partial support from the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) component of NASA’s AURA mission and the SMD Office of Education for ozonesonde launches.

AURA is one of the suite of spacecraft in the Earth Observing System (EOS). AURA is concerned with atmospheric chemistry  includes the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) to investigate tropospheric and stratospheric ozone.

A network of colleges and universities participate in AURA data validation with ozone observations. The MECSAT base in Paradox, NY is part of the IONS06 observation network with lead PI, Dr. Anne Thompson, Penn State U. . Most of our 2006 ozone flights coincided with Aura overpasses for TES data validation. Our ozonesonde program was facilitated by an exceptional partnership with Dr. John Merrill at the Graduate School of Oceanography in the University of  Rhode Island. Merrill provided training for faculty and students.

More recently, MEC has joined forces with the University of Houston-Downtown, South Carolina State University and Norfolk State University under the umbrella of the Minority University Consortium for Earth and Space Sciences (MUCESS). This collaboration, building on NASA investments, has led to an expansion of ozone investigations to impact and encourage more minority students to pursue careers in Earth and Atmospheric Science.
